I'm replacing my front half-shafts (axles) and I was looking for the torque value for axle nuts. I decided to change the wheel bearings while the car was down. Because I found many different values for it, Ii contacted SKF's automotive bearing engineer . This torque setting is for the SKF FW503 bearing which was the same bearing that came in the car. He said 229 foot pounds was it. It may be different for a different brand of bearing.

That's a lot of torque innit.... Shouldn't come off.

It is a bunch. That bearing is an opposed angular contact bearing. The inner races have a gap between them . Once tightened up the gap closes up and preloads the bearing. The rolling element (balls) need a little preload to make them roll and not slide or skid. As long as the balls are rolling and have a film of oil between them and the races, it should last. Note: be sure you turn the bearing the correct way if you install new ones on your car.
