Hello from Cocoa, FL - Owner of 2012 Fiat 500 Sport

Post by Kristin » Tue Dec 15, 2020 11:12 am

Hello I'm glad there is a Fiat forum for owners to share information. I'm the owner of a 2012 Fiat Sport (manual transmission) that has had a catastrophic failure at 48K miles. When driving I experienced a low oil pressure light come on (without any other notice). Error message said to stop driving the car, which then was immediately towed to the Fiat dealership. The dealership said it was due to a failed crank thrust washer (validated with photos after tearing the engine down to the part). I'm interested in any other experiences with this issue as it's very unsettling to have an unexpected failure in a low-mileage, well maintained car.

Hello! Glad to have you hear, sorry you have a broken Fiat.

I know that there was a clutch recall on Sport models of that vintage, where there could be early clutch failure due to an overextension of the clutch release. But I've never heard of anyone having a thrust washer issue from it. Maybe possible?

I know another place you may want to ask, if you're on Facebook, where you might get more ears than here, is our Facebook Group the Broken Fiat Club.

Thanks very much for the reply. I was a part of the clutch recall. I asked the dealership whether there was any relationship and they said it was a pedal replacement with no impact on the engine. I am also in the Broken Fiat facebook group where I posted on this issue. There are a few threads on this site that covered similar issues a few years ago but I haven't found any recent posts.

Welcome to the group. I’ve never heard of anyone having that specific issue and engine failure and I don’t really understand the relationship to the clutch recall. If you get more details please share.
