Clutch kit and Lightweight Flywheel

Post by Krom.motsu » Mon Jan 20, 2020 7:17 pm

I am replacing my clutch soon and am wondering if there is any upgrade for a 12 sport? Also looking for a lightweight flywheel and someone who can point in the direction of a write up of changing the clutch. I’m not sure how special these cars are when it comes to the transmission and such.

The OEM flywheel on North American nonturbos can be machined to reduce mass by over 1/3rd of a kilogram, with notable improvement in response. Downside is that when you've got the air conditioning working, the AC compressor drags the revs down drastically during 1-2 shifts, making around-town driving a bit herky-jerky when the AC's on. Makes for a bit of a 'windows open until we're at cruising speed in top gear' sort of situation.

The lightened flywheel can also make for a similar effect when you're carrying heavy loads, especially when your gear oil's still cold and your shifts are commensurately slow.

Okay. But is there not a replacement lightweight one? I found one on amazon but not sure if it fits my car

I bought Aasco Motorsports' 3.72kg, 4140 steel flywheel for nonturbo EAB 1368cc FIATs from RRM for my racecar's next motor, so I can only give an impression of how it looks in the box. Judging by how the flywheel had beaten up on the sides of the box, I felt it necessary to send the unit out to have the balance checked as soon as I saw it. Don't know who else sells the Aasco flywheels, to be honest. I'd read on the 500 Owner's Forum that Vivid Racing was selling them, but I just had a look and couldn't find it there, nor on RRM's site, nor on Aasco's site. Happy hunting, I guess?

Ah! Found it at FRSport. https://frsport.com/aasco-102515-12-lig ... rrency=CAD Says billet aluminum at the top of the page and billet steel in the description. It's steel.

I think you guys are talking about different things.

There are lots of options for lightweight pulleys that drive the accessory belt. I run one from MPX that is for the NA 1.4L.

I've not seen any clutch kits or lwfw for the C514 gearbox in the 2012-2017 500 Pop & Sport. It might be worth reaching out to Clutchmasters and/or South Bend directly and asking if they have anything for the non-turbo cars. I'll PM you the email address I have for Clutchmasters.
2013 Abarth 500c (NGen Turbo'd) - Isabella
2012 500 Pop (broken, engine rebuild on hold) - Popabella
2014 500L (Daily workhorse) - The Hulk
2013 Abarth 500 (broken engine, current project) - Abby
