Into the head!

Thought about cleaning up the oil cooler side, but later....

In the meantime removed the remaining bolts on the valve cover (8mm). I believe there are 294 of them, or at least no matter how many you remove there is always one more. Then revealed the RTV gasket seal and a very oil covered MA brick.

Removed the brick (9 x T45 bolts).

There are some noticeable marks on the #1 cylinder intake cam and follower. Wondering if this is the original 2015 oil in here, and getting a bit worried about what the bottom end is going to look like. Going to soldier on though, if only for science and spares.

Impact grade T50 and the head is off. Bit crusty but not too bad

Didn't take good notes today, things went a bit sideways.

Decided to tackle the dirty side, where the oil cooler had obviously taken a whack and made a mess.

Started by removing the hard lines.

I think this bolt in the middle of the block is underneath the hard line on the 2012, I'll need to check but it's above the line on the 2015 which is interesting.

Once I removed the big bolt from the oil cooler assembly the whole thing fell off. It has cracked where the two 15mm bolts hold it in place.

Removed the oil pan (which is easier with all the bolts removed). The auto transmission of this engine has these two huge T45 bolts that hold it through the adapter plate. Seems like total overkill and creates the silly need to remove the transmission to remove the oil pan (not an issue for me though). Means I'm not going to be able to reuse this pan.

Pulled the broken oil pump

The non-turbo pump seems to be on backorder. I don’t trust the one in the other engine since there are pressure issues.
Could probably use a turbo engine pump, but they are 3 times the price.

Anyway, moving on to the pistons and crank.

Noticed some scoring on the crank.

Pulled the pistons this morning, before the excessive heat took over the garage.

10mm cap bolts. I think it’s best to loosen them all before removing any pistons. Otherwise the crank moves around too easily as you try to break them loose.

Remove the bearing cap and attach the connecting rod guides. Be careful not to turn the crank as you’ll lose the rod and have to go fishing.

Everything looks in good shape internally. Pistons are dirty but not damaged, piston bores are clean and all the bearings looks good.

Removed the 20 13mm bolts for the crank bed plate but it didn't want to come off. Seems like the rear main is holding it in place, or perhaps just need to use bigger muscles.

Anyway the rear main isn't very accessible while the engine is on the stand.

I flipped it and moved it to the bench. That's much easier with it stripped down.

While there I thought I'd remove the transmission flex plate. Just two T50 bolts, but one of them just melted under minimal pressure.

Ended up drilling out the hole and using a screw removal tool (and a large adjustable wrench) to extract it.

The rear main is just 6 small T30 bolts.

Don't know if that freed up the bedplate yet as the engine is the wrong way up and the heat drove me out of the garage for the day.
