Re: Popabella - Just can't sell it.
Final house move this week hopefully, and then perhaps I'll have time in March to start stripping the car down again.

starting to work on the donor engine. Trying to decide whether just to do the minimal necessary or really dig into this thing and just do a rebuild.

Re: Popabella - Just can't sell it.
So started taking the stuff off the donor block so that I can clean all of the oil and grease off it. The intake manifold is cracked and the oil cooler is crushed so those will have to be moved over from the current engine.
Started with removing the flywheel (T50 bolts). Behind that is the crank sensor, which I removed (T20 bolt) since this is a 2015 engine and I’ll be using the 2012 sensor on the crank pulley. I don’t know if I’ll need to leave the insert that the crank sensor reads. It’s redundant but does that impact the clearance of the flywheel ?

Re: Popabella - Just can't sell it.
So moved the block over to an engine stand for a bit more stability. The stand mounts to the block with the transmission bolts (M12x1.25x100 bolts and a couple of M12 nuts).
Start with the simple stuff, coil packs and plugs. Removed the wiring for the coil packs so that the oil filler can be unscrewed. Next the intake manifold since it’s trash, and that side of the block is much less dirty. Unclipped the harness and removed all the bolts. Including the one tucked up out of sight, and the one on top of the valve cover The the manifold pulls easily when everything is disconnected
Where to start, where to start?

Re: Popabella - Just can't sell it.
Same. I think with the 2015 bottom end and a health 2012 top end this will work well.

Re: Popabella - Just can't sell it.
Salvaged the fuel rail, injectors and throttle body from the intake manifold. I don't have the appropriate e-torx socket but an 8mm socket worked and a socket wrench (no power tools) worked fine.
Disconnected the small ground strap and knock sensor. The connectors to the multi-air did not want to come off. I always feel nervous using force on those given how fragile the multi-air brick is.
Removed the fuel rail protector (I think that's what it is) from the valve cover. Seems to be a lot of rtv and oil on these bolts. The valve cover itself is clearly fastened on with generous amounts of rtv in the wrong places. Something to look forward to in future steps.
